Patriots Heels

My husband (woop!! 2 months in & going strong!) and I are big football fans. I like the Broncos and he likes the Patriots... I know... it's amazing we get along. I will admit that the Pats are my second team and I will cheer for them... as long as they aren't playing the Broncos. A couple years ago (as I'm sitting here I'm realizing WAY more than a couple) I decided to make a pair of Patriots heels for a friend of mine for her birthday. Not wanting hers to look bad, I decided to make myself some first as a test ;). My original goal was to cover the Patriots logo in rhinestones. I bought clear rhinestones with no heat adhesive on the back (VERY hard to find) so that the colors would shine through, but after attempting it on one shoe, I gave up. It wasn't worth the time or effort and didn't look great. Outcome: one of the logos on my shoe looks a bit bumpy if you look at it up close.

This is the after affect of my rhinestoning attempt.

Quick details:

Pearl hours: 30-35 hours
Start to Finish: 6 months
Difficulty: Medium

Project thoughts:

These were one of those stop start projects that got a bit more complicated than expected. I bought the shoes then had to go out to get the supplies. Luckily, while trying to figure out how I would hand draw a patriot and therefore putting the project off for months, I found a face paint stencil. Then I had my rhinestone issue... Basically, had I been fully prepared to do it, the project would have taken me half as long maybe even less. How do I know? Because I made them again but with a Broncos logo (stay tuned for a post on that later)!

Lessons learned:

  • Printing an image on regular paper and cutting it out can be JUST as good as purchasing a stencil
  • I'm not ready to deal with rhinestones...
  • Strangers, specifically men, will do the following if you have a sports team's logo on your shoes:
    • Ask you where you got them because they HAVE to get a pair for their wife
    • Find it necessary to pull up the hem of your jeans to see what it is... yes... that happened... it was creepy

How I'd do it differently next time:

  • NO RHINESTONES
  • Get all my supplies set first (yeah right)
  • Be a little more confident. I bought Payless shoes for these and I'm worried they wont hold up so I sadly barely wear them anymore. Next time I'll be more confident and buy a higher quality shoe.
